Neocaridina Davidi is a freshwater shrimp belonging to the Atyidae animal family. There are many variants on the market that differ mainly in the color of the shell, red cherry shrimp (RCS) being the most popular one. They are among the most keeped dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby because of their look and due to their hardiness and relative ease. One amazing variation of neocaridina davidi is commonly referred to as the Blue Dream shrimp, Blue Velvet Shrimp, Deep Blue Shrimp, or sometimes Sapphire shrimp, because of their bright blue color.

Blue Dream Shrimp main characteristics and behavior
Blue Dream shrimp are one of the most stunning varieties of neocaridina davidi. The bluest of all blue shrimp, they will definitely add some color and elegance to your tank.
In nature, neocaridinas live in large groups and during the day they tend to hide in the thick bushes of plants, under the roots or in narrow spaces in order to protect themselves from larger fish or crustacean. Because of their small size, they are a really easy prey upon – if you have other guests in your aquarium, it is advisable to insert adequate amounts of moss and other hiding spots for them.
Blue Dream Shrimp diet and nutrition
RCS including the blue dream variety are decent algae eaters and also fond of decaying organic matter (from plants to worms and even other deceased fish and shrimps). You can feed them any shrimp food meant for caridines and neocaridines, as well as freshly boiled vegetables. Try to feed them food matching their natural color, so to really make it shine!
Food for blue shrimp
The best food for blue velvet shrimp / blue dream shrimp is specialty shrimp feeding meant for black or blue shrimp varieties, such as the MK-BREED Black Diamond Premium Crystal Black Bee Shrimp Food.

In nature, neocaridina davidi are widespread across Southeast Asia – mainly Taiwan, southern China, Vietnam and Korea. They were more recently introduced to the Hawaiian archipelago.
Ease of keeping
Like other neocaridina davidi, this variant is very easy to keep and ideal for beginners in the hobby. They can withstand a range variety of water conditions and are by no means picky eaters, and they propagate naturally in freshwater. This means that you will notice females occasionally carrying eggs and giving birth to shrimplets (make sure to know how to take care of them), although if you keep different variations of neocaridina the babies could lose their shiny color.
Cherry Shrimp Breeding
Crossbreeding shrimp of different color
When you keep together two different variations of neocaridina you may end up with babies that do not match their mother’s original color. This is especially true if you have, say, Blue Velvet shrimp and red colored RCS in the same tank – potentially resulting in brownish shrimplets. But the same could occur if you have shrimp of the same color, but different species! A common mistake is to think that breeding together a Blue Dream shrimp and a Blue Jelly shrimp will result in a blue offspring – this is not the case. If you wish to preserve the perfect blue appearance of your Blue Dream shrimp, breed them with a black shrimp instead – like a Carbon Rili or Black Sakura.
