Aqueon Designer 8.75G LED Shrimp Aquarium Kit Review [2020]

Aqueon recently released two versions of a freshwater nano tank “kit” – both including either a 7.5 gallon or 8.75 gallon tank along with anything you need to setup a shrimp aquarium: substrate, filter, and LED plant lights. While somewhat similar in both price and features, the 8.75 gallons variation is not just larger in size, but also comes in a “designer” shape which offers an angled top for a better viewing perspective of its inhabitants.

The best thing about this tank is undoubtly its look and feel. Its angled top and overall shape make for an elegant addition to your tank collection while allowing you to enjoy spectacle views of your aquatic pets. Many of its parts are dismountable and you can decide to get rid of the top lid altogether making this a rimless tank, if you wish to. It is thought as a beginner’s tank for shrimp keepers and it does its job pretty well – it has nearly everything you need to get started in the hobby.

Dimensions:

18.25” x 12” x 13”

Kit includes:
  • 8.75G Glass Aquarium with Clear Lid

Substrate and water

The kit includes 10lbs of substrate as well as a water conditioning sachet to kick-start your aquarium. The substrate is clay based and comes in the form of very lightweight plant- and shrimp- friendly pellets.

Box description: “Aqueon® Plant and Shrimp Aquarium Substrate is great for use with a wide  variety of freshwater plants, shrimp, snails and tropical fish. Made with  a clay-based material, it allows newly budding and mature plants’ root systems  to grow and flourish.”

The kit also contains a water conditioner “specifically formulated for smaller aquariums with freshwater shrimp and other crustaceans. Instantly conditions tap water making it safe by neutralizing harmful chlorine, chloramines, ammonia and heavy metals.”

Filtration System

The QuietFlow power filtration system that comes with this tank comprises replaceable QuietFlow Internal Power Filters especially thought for the safety of your shrimplets, preventing baby shrimp from getting sucked onto the filter. The QuietFlow also keeps to its name of being an incredibly silent filter. The only downside about this filter is that it is quite big – you may want to replace it once the population of your tank gets larger in order to free up some space.

Box description: “Specially designed for freshwater aquariums containing shrimp, small fish and other invertebrates. This filter includes a protective intake grid, pre-filter foam sponge that prevents livestock from entering the filter housing and carbon cartridge.”

Lighting

The kit contains a clip-on LED lamp with 60 low brightness lights, which is ideal for two reasons: firstly, it won’t disturb the shrimp by generating heat even if kept on for long period of times; secondly, it provides enough light for vegetation to grow at a moderated pace. The light is rather easy on the eyes and allows for an athmospheric view of what’s going on inside your tank.

Heating (not included)

The main drawback of this kit is that it does not include a heater, which is surprising for an otherwise complete starter kit. The good news is that you can complete the kit yourself by purchasing an inexpensive Aqueon flat heater and then you are really good to go.

Box description: “Aqueon® Aquatic Flat Heaters are designed for small desktops  up to 10 gallons. They are completely submersible, easy to install and efficiently warm water.”queon

Final thoughts

Aqueon Designer 8.75G LED Shrimp Aquarium Kit Review

  • Wonderful angled top design
  • Subtle clip-on LED lights
  • Safe and quiet filtering system

Whether this tank is right for you depends on a number of factors and you should put your expectations in place before purchasing. Both the 7.5 and designer 8.75 gallon tank kits consistently receive mixed reviews, although the 8.75 “designer” gallon generally performs better and surely does what its name suggest – it offers you a stylish piece of furniture that allows for spectacular views of its inhabitants. All in all, it is still an excellent starter kit complete with substrate, light, and filtration for hobbyist shrimp keepers.
